Blundstone – classic Chelsea boots from Tasmania
Blundstone’s history began in the 1850s, when the Blundstone family arrived in Hobart after a 93-day voyage from England. John Blundstone and Sons was founded in 1870, and the business developed from importing footwear to manufacturing durable leather boots using hides from local Tasmanian suppliers.
At the Hobart International Exhibition in 1894, Blundstone boots were recognised for their high quality and solid craftsmanship. The boots were developed to withstand the demanding conditions of the Tasmanian landscape, while also being worn on Hobart’s cobbled streets, farms and factory floors.
The now-iconic Blundstone 500 Series was created in the 1960s. Its basic design, featuring elastic side panels and distinctive pull tabs, has remained throughout the years, while materials, soles and manufacturing techniques have continued to evolve. According to Blundstone, more than 25 million pairs of the #500 model have been sold worldwide.
Today, Blundstone remains a family-owned company with its headquarters in Tasmania. Blundstone Originals or Classics – what is the difference?
Blundstone Originals is the range that stays closest to the original Blundstone boot. Models #500 and #510 are made from more substantial leather and have a slightly firmer, closer-fitting feel across the foot and toes. The leather usually requires a little more time to soften, but gradually moulds to the shape of the foot. Originals are ideal for anyone looking for the classic, robust and understated Blundstone feel.
Blundstone Classics builds on the same well-known Chelsea boot design but has been developed with a greater focus on comfort. Models #585 and #1609 are made from softer, more flexible leather and feature leather lining and a roomier fit with more space around the toes and forefoot. Classics also provide additional cushioning underfoot and include an extra set of footbeds, allowing the fit to be adjusted. The result is a softer feel from the first wear and lasting comfort throughout long days.
Both ranges feature durable TPU outsoles, XRD® shock absorption in the heel and Blundstone’s classic elastic side panels and pull tabs. The main difference is therefore the fit and level of comfort: Originals provide a firmer, more traditional feel, while Classics are softer, roomier and more cushioned.
